Extensional flow in the literature - a näıve assessment ?

چکیده
This note reviews the occurrence of extensional flow topics in the rheological literature. A simple approach is taken so the results have to be regarded with caution.

One hundred years of extensional flow ?
This historical review takes a few selected issues from the rheological studies of extensional flow that fill the literature, starting with extracts from the seminal papers of Trouton (Proc. Roy. Soc. A77 (1906) 426-440) and Fano (Archivio di fisiologio, 5 (1908) 365-370). Work in the first half of the twentieth century on spinnability and extensional viscosity measurement is highlighted, follo...
متن کاملExtensional opto-rheometry with biofluids and ultra-dilute polymer solutions
Complex fluids containing long polymer chains exhibit measurably large resistance to stretching or extensional flows, due to additional stresses generated by the extensional deformation of the underlying fluid microstructure. Understanding and quantifying the response of such elastic fluids to extensional flows is necessary for optimizing fluid composition for technological applications like in...
متن کاملFlow Cytometry: A New Approach for Indirect Assessment of Sperm Protamine Deficiency
Background Flow cytometry (FCM) has been extensively used to study mammalian sperm in the areas of clinical andrology and reproductive toxicology. FCM provides a powerful advantage over microscopy technique in terms of rapid accurate and reproducible technology for the quantification of various cell characteristics including chromatin status. During spermiogenesis histones are replaced by prota...
متن کاملEnhanced Dissolution of Liquid Microdroplets in the Extensional Creeping Flow of a Hydrodynamic Trap.
A novel noncontact technique based on hydrodynamic trapping is presented to study the dissolution of freely suspended liquid microdroplets into a second immiscible phase in a simple extensional creeping flow. Benzyl benzoate (BB) and n-decanol microdroplets are individually trapped at the stagnation point of a planar extensional flow, and dissolution of single microdroplets into an aqueous solu...
متن کاملMicrofluidic assessment of mechanical cell damage by extensional stress.
Mammalian cells have been widely used in bioreactors to produce biological products such as pharmaceutical materials. The productivity of such bioreactors is vastly affected by flow-induced cell damage in complicated flow environments, such as agitation-driven turbulence and oxygen bubble bursting at the interface between the culturing medium and air. However, there is no systematic approach to...
